Abstract Sisterhood
Spring 2023 Artist Residency
Thank you for your interest in the Abstract Sisterhood Artist Residency in Washington, DC. The Abstract Sisterhood Collective was founded in 2018 and included six working artists: Kibian Adams, Aliana Grace Bailey, Kristen Campbell (nee Hayes), Kamilah House-Lewis, Lory Ivey Alexander, and Natacha Thys. The Sisterhood is more than a collective of artists
While we seek artists whose practices, values, and goals align with the existing members, we believe that diversity of practice, experience, network, and background lend to building well-rounded artists and allowing us to better fulfill our obligations to the community of women artists of Indigenous Western Hemispherian descent, to the art community as a whole, and to the global African diaspora. If you have a discrete project to complete in under 1 month or you just need a month to work in a dedicated, shared studio space in Washington, DC, we encourage you to apply.
The application process is described below. To apply, please send an inquiry below.
an artist statement (no more than 500 words or 10 minutes of video) and/or curriculum vitae (including exhibitions and/or art community involvement);
a link to the artist’s online portfolio (Instagram is fine) or submission of 5-10 original works created in the last 3 years;
links to the artist’s art-related website and/or social media profiles.
A background check is required prior to residency.
Note that there is no minimum requirement for the exhibition list, but artists who participate must seek to show work and grow their careers as professional artists. Likewise, there is no requirement that one has participated in collectives, residencies, or belongs to arts organizations, but artists are expected to seek to be active in the arts community. Finally, the portfolio may include static images (as jpgs or pngs), audio, video, or written work. Any video or audio must be hosted and linked in the application so that our system is not required to house large files.
