Lory Ivey Alexander

Artist & Social Engineer

Lory Ivey Alexander is a contemporary visual artist, lawyer, and writer living in her birthplace Washington, DC. Best known for her multilayered, vibrantly colored paintings, Ms. Ivey Alexander’s major interests are Black America and American history, especially the exploring the intersections of Black, Indigenous, and white American stories. Her works bear the evidence of the artist’s hand and the environment in which they were made.

In 2018, Ms. Ivey Alexander founded the Abstract Sisterhood, a collective of conceptually-driven Black women artists. In addition to an in-person collective, Abstract Sisterhood is a photo blog of abstract and conceptual art by the larger sisterhood of women of the African Diaspora.

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic and amidst social unrest and state killings, Ms. Ivey Alexander launched the Black + Breathing project to create a space for Black life and air for Black consumption.
